Increasing involvement of children and young people in regulated care inspections (using technology) - from the Care Inspectorate

Aligned to the Care Inspectorate’s Promise workstream one, the overall aim of this project is to improve how involved and informed children and young people feel in our inspection feedback process. We tested feedback to children and young people post-inspection. This involved both face-to-face and video methods of feedback. The project has entered a new stage and by March 2024, it is planned to have developed and implemented a feedback toolkit and procedures, that can be used by all inspectors in the children and young people’s national inspection teams. This stage of implementation began in December 2023 and involves three inspectors from the children and young people (CYP) team, young inspection volunteers, the methodology team and our communications team.

New guidance on vitamin D supplements for residents in adult care homes - from the Care Inspectorate

We have published new guidance on offering vitamin D nutritional supplements to eligible residents in adult care homes.
The guidance was developed by a Scottish Government Short Life Working Group (SLWG) comprising care homes and those that support care homes. The SLWG recommended that care home staff discuss vitamin D supplements with residents and/or their representatives and that any decisions should be considered on an individual basis, considering people’s personal choice, needs and circumstances. The guidance materials, which were successfully piloted in some care homes, aim to support care home staff with these conversations.
The guidance and a supporting letter for care homes can be found on The Hub.

A quality improvement collaborative is a way of providing sustained quality improvement support to providers over several months. We are currently supporting a national provider group with several services. We are seven months into an eight-month programme with this national provider, delivering three in-person full day workshops that have included introducing self-evaluation and quality improvement tools. This work has resulted in six care homes working on 14 quality improvement projects. The workshops have received positive feedback from participants. Additional positive comments have been fed back by the provider’s senior leadership team.
