Dedicated information published to help survivors

Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS) has partnered with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) and Visibility Scotland to create a new set of vision after stroke resources.

The Vision after Stroke Essential Guide and accompanying Double Vision, Visual Neglect/Inattention, and Visual Field Loss Factsheets gives advice, support and information to people who are going through vision loss, and their carers.

Joanne Graham, director of service delivery at CHSS, said: “With around two out of every three people who have a stroke experiencing some visual changes we knew it was important to have a series of dedicated resources to support them. Our booklets cover the key information in a bite sized and accessible way.

“Collaboration is also an important aspect of creating trustworthy and reliable health information. Which is why we are so pleased to have worked on this project with RNIB and Visibility Scotland.

“Each organisation brings its own perspectives and insights to make the resources important additions to the materials available for people who have visual changes after a stroke.”

Poonam Patel, eye health information service manager at RNIB, said: “Sight loss after a stroke is a common health change that requires specialised support. Many individuals experiencing these significant changes often feel isolated and frustrated due to a lack of information and or disjointed services.

“Bringing together the expertise of all three charities has been really valuable. This collaboration has helped us develop patient resources that are practical, informed and focused on what really matters to people, combining the strengths and experience of each of our organisations.”

Laura Walker, chief executive officer at Visibility Scotland, said: “Our shared goal is to provide expert resources that give access to important information during a critical time. We want to ensure that everyone has equitable access - the right support at the right time.”
