Monkeypox is a rare viral infection only recently detected in the Scotland. It is generally a mild illness, spread by very close contact with someone already infected and with symptoms of monkeypox. Most people recover within two to four weeks.

The risk of catching monkeypox in Scotland currently remains low. On 1 June, Public Health Scotland confirmed that there are a total of five confirmed cases of monkeypox in Scotland.

Monkeypox rash can sometimes be confused with other diseases that can look similar, like chickenpox. A diagnosis of monkeypox requires an assessment by a health professional and specific testing so that expert advice about any actions required can be provided.

Public Health Scotland recommend that people who are in contact with someone confirmed as infected should be assessed by a health professional to determine if there is a need for exclusion  or self-isolation.
